Heavy rain hits Hokkaido, Kyushu regions
NHK -- Jul 10
Officials at Japan's Meteorological Agency are warning of mudslides and floods in Hokkaido, northern Japan, as well as in Kyushu in the southwest of the country. Both areas have been hit by heavy rain.

The officials say a stationary front that's been lingering over western Japan and a low-pressure pattern near Hokkaido are making atmospheric conditions unstable over the 2 regions.

They estimate that about 80 millimeters of rain poured in Shiranuka Town in Hokkaido for one hour till 2 PM on Sunday.

Agency officials are calling on residents to stay on high alert. They also warn that some areas in Hokkaido may have more than 50 millimeters of rain per hour through Sunday evening, accompanied by thunder.

Torrential rain hit southern Kyushu intermittently on Sunday morning. In some areas, over 500 millimeters of rain has fallen since Thursday. That's more rain than normally falls in the whole month of July.

A warning against mudslides has been issued for Miyazaki and Kumamoto prefectures as well as part of Kagoshima Prefecture.
