Demand to block restart of Genkai reactors nixed

The Saga District Court on Tuesday rejected a request from local residents for an injunction to block the planned restart of the No. 3 and No. 4 reactors at Kyushu Electric Power Co.'s Genkai nuclear power plant in Saga Prefecture.

In the ruling, presiding Judge Takeshi Tachikawa said the Nuclear Regulation Authority "strictly and closely" assessed the two reactors before it found that they meet new safety regulations introduced in the wake of the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear crisis.

The plaintiffs, from Saga and the neighboring prefecture of Fukuoka, had claimed that the safety of the Genkai reactors is not secured. The No. 3 reactor is now expected to be reactivated this autumn at the earliest.
