New map for Nishinoshima Island created

Japanese authorities have created a new map of a remote island whose area has expanded through volcanic activity.

In November 2013, volcanic activity started at Nishinoshima Island about 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo. Lava increased the size of the island.

Officials at the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan conducted on-site surveys from last October through December. Based on the surveys, the authority redrew the map of the island for the first time in 26 years.

The new map gives the island an area of 2.7 square kilometers, about 9 times the earlier figure. And the highest point is 143 meters above sea level, nearly 6 times the old height.
