Pufferfish reach Y19,000 at 1st Shimonoseki auction

Sep 23 (the-japan-news.com) - The first winning bids for this season’s Japanese pufferfish reached as much as ¥19,000 per kilogram at the Haedomari Market in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, early Friday. Buyers and auctioneers agreed on prices with hand signals inside black cloths around the auctioneers’ arms.

The market is known for having the largest trade volume of wild Japanese pufferfish, also known as tiger puffers, in Japan. The winning bids nearly equaled previous averages.

About 180 kilograms of Japanese pufferfish caught in the Sea of Japan and 250 kilograms caught in the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean were auctioned, in addition to 3.5 tons of cultivated pufferfish.
