80 Japan local govts eyeing night junior high schools
Jiji -- Nov 09
Eighty local governments in Japan are considering or making preparations for the establishment of pubic night junior high schools to be attended by people who were unable to finish compulsory education for various reasons and foreigners, the education ministry has said.

They are six prefectures and 74 municipalities, according to a survey report released by the ministry on Tuesday.

The moves come after a law urging local governments to provide more opportunities for education took effect earlier this year. It calls on each of the nation's 47 prefectures to have at least one night junior high school.

As of July 1, eight prefectures--Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, Nara and Hiroshima--had a total of 31 such schools, according to the survey.

Of the 80 prefectures and municipalities, the city of Matsudo in Chiba, east of Tokyo, and the city of Kawaguchi, Saitama Prefecture, north of the capital, are each planning to open a night junior high school as early as in April 2019, the survey showed.
