Roller coaster abruptly stops at USJ

NHK -- May 02

A roller coaster at an amusement park in Osaka, central Japan, suddenly stopped on Tuesday afternoon.

More than 60 riders were left hanging upside down for up to 2 hours. The park operator says no one was injured.

Universal Studios Japan is a theme park centered on Hollywood movies.

Two carriages of the Flying Dinosaur ride automatically stopped after a sensor that detects possible problems was tripped.

One of the carriages was about 20 to 30 meters above the ground, on its way to the highest point, when the ride stopped.

The roller coaster simulates being seized from behind by a flying dinosaur and pulled high into the air.

The park's staff guided the riders one by one down a side passage of the structure. The last rider got to the ground about 2 hours after the roller coaster stopped.
