Strong earthquake hits east of Tokyo

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake shook Chiba Prefecture east of Tokyo on Saturday.

The tremor was felt around 8:23 PM local time. No tsunami alert has been issued.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says the epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean off Chiba's eastern coast at a depth of 66 kilometers.

Officials say the quake had an intensity of 5 minus on the Japanese scale of 0 to 7 in Chonan Town and 4 in the surrounding areas.
