Japan to gear up for casino introduction as early as mid-2020s
Jiji -- Jul 21
The government is set to begin in earnest preparations for the launch of Japan's first legal casino as early as the mid-2020s, after a casino introduction bill was enacted Friday.

The government regards the introduction of casino-featuring integrated resorts, or IRs, under the new law as a key step to solidify the status of Japan as an advanced tourism nation.

Between the summer and autumn of 2019, the government plans to set up a casino supervisory body while drawing up a basic policy on the selection of IR locations.

The so-called casino control committee is due to check casino operators thoroughly for any links to crime syndicates or other antisocial entities, before the government grants licenses to them.

The committee will also decide the range of casino games to be allowed, such as roulette, blackjack and slot machines, as the law lacks any stipulation on the matter.
