Ampil approaching Okinawa with storm zone

Severe tropical storm Ampil is moving toward Japan's southwestern island of Okinawa, bringing strong winds and high waves.

The Meteorological Agency says that as of 7 PM on Friday, Ampil was heading north-northwest 230 kilometers off Minami-Daito Island at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour.

The agency says the storm is packing winds up to 90 kilometers per hour near its center, and gusts reaching nearly 130 kilometers per hour.

The developing storm is expected to come closer to Okinawa's main island on Saturday morning.
