Voters in Okinawa have chosen Denny Tamaki as their next governor. The former Lower House lawmaker has won Sunday's election.
Tamaki opposes the central government's plan to move a US military base within the prefecture.
During the campaign, Tamaki said he would continue to oppose the central government's plan to relocate the US Futenma air station. That was what the late governor Takeshi Onaga fought for until his death in August.
Tamaki says no new bases should be built in Okinawa. He is backed by national opposition parties that supported Onaga.
Tamaki's main opponent, Atsushi Sakima, was backed by the ruling coalition.
Tamaki has proposed making Okinawa an Asian hub for culture, technology, and other fields as a way to improve the economy.
