A 17-year-old high school baseball player has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and other charges, but his school said Saturday it wanted the team to continue to play in the ongoing national high school baseball tournament.
The Utsunomiya Chuo Police Station arrested the boy on Friday on suspicion of assaulting and injuring a 16-year-old girl at about 7 a.m. on Aug. 10 while she was walking in Utsunomiya, and robbing her of thousands of yen in cash.
A senior official of the police station said an investigation was begun based on such evidence as the victim's description of her attacker's face. However, the boy, who belongs to the baseball team of a private high school in Utsunomiya, has denied taking her money, police said.
