Stocks close 1.73% higher

Tokyo stocks rose 1.73% on Wednesday, tracking gains on Wall Street after upbeat U.S. economic data and on rising hopes for further stimulus measures by the Federal Reserve.

The Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange added 152.58 points to 8,959.96, while the broader Topix index of all first-section shares gained 1.31%, or 9.56 points, to 741.82.

The rise came on expectations the Fed, which starts a two-day policy meeting Wednesday, will launch a third round of quantitative easing, or bond buying, to boost the world's biggest economy.
