「烏の濡れ羽（ば）色」という表現を耳にしたことがありますか？ これは、水に濡れた烏の羽根のように、つやつやした黒い色を指しています。そう、日本人女性の髪の形容なのです。

七月、オレンジ色の花びらに黒い斑点のあるユリが咲き始めます。ユリは可憐な姿をした花ですが、このオレンジ色のユリには「オニユリ」という恐ろしい名前がついているのです。

「そこがミソだ」「そこがキモだ」という二つの文章は、調味料の味噌や肝臓だと解釈すると何を伝えたいのか分からなくなってしまいます。今回も、一風変わった意味で使われることばを紹介しますね。それは、「そこがツボだ」という文章です。

前回は「そこがミソだ」という文章の意味を紹介しました。それでは同じ文の構造をなす「そこがキモだ」はどのような意味か分かりますか。

和食に欠かせない調味料・味噌。では、「そこがミソだ」という文はどんな意味なのでしょう。実は、「ミソ」には「得意に思っていること」や「特色とする点」などという意味があるのです。

人生の1/3を占めるという睡眠。「睡」にも「眠」にも左側に「目」が書かれていますね。 「睡」の右側「垂」は「たれる」という訓読みを持っていて、「まぶたを垂れて（目をつぶって）眠る」という意味です。「眠」には「ねむる」という訓読みがあり、「目をつぶって眠る」という意味。右側の「民」は、目を↑型の針で突く様子を記号化したもので、元来「逃亡を防ぐために目を見えなくした奴隷」を指していたのだとか。ここから、「目が見えない状態となって眠る」という意味を「眠」の文字が担うようになったのです。

「れんが」と呼ばれる部首を知っていますか？ 漢字では「連火」と表わし、「れっか（列火）」とも呼ばれます。「火」を表わす記号が漢字の下の部分につく場合、四つの点「灬」になるのです。今日は、この「れんが」を部首に持つ漢字を紹介しましょう。

「おふくろの味」という表現を聞いたことがありますか？ 「おふくろ」とは「母親」のことです。文の構成は「バナナの味」や「リンゴの味」と同じですが、「おふくろの味」は母親をなめてみて味わうのではありません。 「おふくろの味」とは「母が作ってくれた料理の味」を指しているのです。特に、大人になったときに幼少時代から味わってきた母の家庭料理を懐かしむような場面で使われます。レストランの料理と違って、家庭料理は家々によって材料や味付け、調理方法が異なります。そして自分の家族だけが食べてきた味は、家族との思い出をも含んでいるため、「おふくろの味」を好ましく思うのです。 日本人が「おふくろの味」と聞いて思い起こすメニューは、味噌汁や肉じゃが、きんぴらごぼうなど、日常的に食卓にのぼる和食だそうです。しかも、女性よりも男性の方が「おふくろの味」を懐かしく、おいしく感じる傾向にあるとか。その理由は、日本では女性の方が料理をする場合が多く、自分の食べてきた味を元に調理できるのに対し、男性は自ら料理して「おふくろの味」を再現する機会が少ないからだと考えられます。 ちなみに、「おふくろ」ということばは室町時代から使われ、その語源には諸説あります。代表的な説は、母親が金銭を袋に入れて管理していたことから、「ふくろ」と呼ばれるようになり、丁寧な言い回しの接頭語「お」をつけて「おふくろ」という語が生まれたという説です。しかし、正確な語源は分かっていません。 ＝＝＝＝ Have you ever heard of the expression ofukuro no aji or “mother flavored”? 「花」という漢字は漢字学習の初期段階で習いましたね。この文字を分解してみると、「廾」（くさかんむり）と「化」に分けられます。昔の人は、花を見たときに、「これは緑の草が変化して、赤や白になったのだ」と考えたのでしょう。だから、「草（廾）が化ける」と記号化したのです。 「貨」という文字にも「化」が見られますよ。この文字は金銭を意味し、「貝がら」が通貨として用いられていたことを表わしています。金銭は様々な物と交換できるもの。つまり、金銭は時として他の物に「変化」するのです。 さて、「訛」という漢字を見たことがありますか？　これは「なまり」と読みます。方言のことですね。直接的には「本来の姿を変えたことば」を意味していますが、地方によって表現の仕方が変化している言い回しのことを「なまり」というのです。 では、「革」が「化ける」とどうなりますか？　「靴」（くつ）になります。 さらに「木」が「花」のように「化ける」ときには？　「椛」（もみじ）という漢字になります。秋になるとカエデの葉は花のように赤や黄色に色づきます。日本人は、この様子を表わして「椛」という文字を作りました。 「化」の文字は、左側が倒れた人を、右側が座った人を表わしているのだそうです。また、一説には左側は正常に立っている人、右側は変わったポーズをしている人を表わしているとか。いずれにせよ、通常とは姿を変えている様子を示しています。このため、「化」の文字が書かれる漢字は、何らかの変化を意味することとなるのです。 ＝＝＝＝ You learn the kanji 花 (hana) or “flower” at the beginning of your kanji study. If you take this character apart, it can be divided into 廾 (kusakanmuri) and 化 (ka). たくさんの木がびっしりと茂っている様子を表わす漢字が「森」。いかにも「木」が生い茂っているように感じられますね。 「晶（しょう）」は「水晶」という熟語に用いられ、人名漢字としては「あきら」や「まさ」と読みます。見るからに明るい印象を受ける漢字ですが、星が三つ光る様子を表わしてできた文字です。澄み切って輝いているものを表わすときに用いられます。 では「轟」はどうでしょう。「車」が三台も走っていますよ。こんなに車の通りが激しいと、大きな音がするでしょうね。
