War on for control of J:COM
Sumitomo Corp. announced Monday it will make a public tender offer of 139,500 yen ($1,548) a share for Jupiter Telecommunications Co. (J:COM), Japan's largest cable TV provider, to become the company's top shareholder.
The trading company's offer runs from March 3 to April 14, escalating competition with telecom firm KDDI Corp., which has also vowed to take control of J:COM. Sumitomo currently is J:COM's second-largest shareholder with a 27.7-percent stake. (Asahi)

Sumitomo tries to foil KDDI bid for J:COM
Sumitomo Corp. has entered the final phase for its launching of a takeover bid for Jupiter Telecommunications Co. (J:COM)--the nation's largest cable TV provider--in a bid to counter the planned public tender offer by KDDI Corp., according to sources.
Sumitomo effectively holds a 27.7 percent stake in the cable giant, making it the second-largest shareholder. Sources said the company was planning to raise its stake to more than a third.

FSA wary of KDDI's purchase plan
The Financial Services Agency has started a probe into KDDI Corp.'s possibly illegal plan to buy a major stake in cable television operator Jupiter Telecommunications Co., according to sources. The financial watchdog is concerned the mobile phone carrier's planned share purchase method could violate the financial instruments and exchange law, they said. (Japan Times)

KDDI to purchase 38% stake in Jupiter
KDDI Corp. said Monday it has agreed to pay $4 billion for U.S.-based Liberty Global Inc.'s 38 percent stake in Japanese cable television operator Jupiter Telecommunications Co. to gain subscribers and get access to a fiber network. The mobile phone operator agreed to pay Liberty Global ¥362 billion for 2.59 million Jupiter shares, the companies said in separate statements. That would be about 44 percent more than Jupiter's closing share price Monday. (Japan Times)

The State of Cloud Computing in Japan
During this week's Cloud Computing Expo, I had an opportunity to meet with a new Japanese Cloud Service Provider. This company, KDDI, is the second largest telco in Japan, and offers a wide range of network-based services, including colo and managed hosting. It has now moved into offering IaaS cloud services (starting roughly six months ago), basing its offering on well-known cloud infrastructure software company 3tera. (cio.com)

DoCoMo, KDDI show augmented reality prototypes
Japan's two largest cellular carriers, NTT DoCoMo and KDDI, are demonstrating this week some of their latest research into augmented reality systems. Augmented reality fuses the real world with digital data and is seen as a potentially popular technology for future cell phones.
NTT DoCoMo's system provides information on the phone's screen by overlaying it on a live image from the phone's camera. (PC World)

KDDI may invest more in WiMax venture
KDDI Corp, Japan's No.2 wireless operator, could invest more in a new WiMax venture as it hunts for market share in data services, its president said on Friday.
The company, which competes with sector leader NTT DoCoMo Inc and No.3 Softbank Corp in a saturated market, hopes demand for high-speed Internet downloads and uploads on the run will help expand its revenue streams over the long term. (Reuters)

Toshiba debuts cellphone-sized ebook reader in Japan
Japanese cell phone giant KDDI and Toshiba have unveiled their own answer to the Kindle called the biblio. Essentially a mobile phone, the tiny ebook reader uses software called Book Player and can store about 5,000 ebooks (from KDDI's EZ Book service) on it's 7 gigabyte harddrive. (dvice.com)

KDDI unveils cell phone lineup
KDDI Corp., operator of the au cell phone service, unveiled on Monday its summer lineup of 13 handsets featuring its first "hi-vision" video camera and a player for reading electronic novels.
KDDI, Japan's second-largest mobile phone carrier, will roll out starting Friday eight new models, excluding five announced previously, with prices ranging from around ¥20,000 to more than ¥50,000. (Japan Times)

Japan ready to pump $10 billion into 3.9G network infrastructure

KDDI to release solar-powered cell phone
Cell phone users could soon be turning to the skies to charge their handsets.
Japan's No. 2 wireless carrier, KDDI Corp., said Monday it will start selling a waterproof, sunlight-powered cell phone in June. The yet-to-be-priced handset is made by Sharp Corp.
A 10-minute solar charge will provide enough juice for a one-minute call or power the handset in standby mode for two hours, KDDI said. The sun can recharge up to 80 percent of the phone's battery. (AP)

Google Android to be used in Japanese set-top box
Japanese telecom company KDDI plans to offer an advanced set-top box for TV watchers this fall, one that uses Google's Android operating system. The au Box, designed and built by Motorola, will be able to play DVDs and CDs through a home entertainment system. It will also let users rip CDs, and is meant to serve as a music and video storage unit for mobile devices. (The Standard)
