Casio cell phones in the frame
Casio's latest cell phone, the CA005, just released by KDD's mobile phone service "au by KDDI," offers two products in one. A typical glossy clamshell mobile phone, the CA005 also packs a 13-megapixel camera into its sharply rectangular form. The phone's camera features smile detection and a fast "burst-shooting" (continuous shooting) rate, which is rare even for compact cameras. Being a cell-phone camera, there is no room for an optical zoom but the wide 28 mm lens does have a 3x digital zoom. (Japan Times)

Supreme Court ruling limits liability of ISP in Internet slander case
A Supreme Court appeal decision handed down Tuesday severely limits the liability of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in cases of online slander.
"Only in cases where an ISP has made a major mistake and overlooked an obvious violation of rights is the provider responsible for paying reparations," read the decision by the Third Petty Bench of the Supreme Court.
While the court dismissed the call for telecommunications giant KDDI that operates ISP Dion to pay reparations, it also ordered that the identity of the individual responsible for the slanderous post in question be revealed. (Mainichi)

Google's fast pipe to Asia almost ready
Google and a group of telecommunications companies are about ready to turn on a fast Internet cable running under the Pacific Ocean from the U.S. to Japan, increasing bandwidth by about 20 percent and giving Google its own connection to Asia.
The Unity Consortium, which consists of Google, Bharti Airtel, Global Transit, KDDI, Pacnet, and SingTel, has nearly completed the testing of the $300 million project. Internet users in Asia will start seeing faster Internet speeds over the next several months from the new cable, which has the potential to create a 7.68Tbps (terabits per second) connection under the Pacific.
