Japan says sorry for Darwin bombing
Japan's government has used a gathering in Darwin to apologise for the country's bombing of the city during World War II.
Japan's Senior Vice Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Tadahiro Matsushita, told a signing ceremony for the $US34 billion Ichthys gas project that he was sorry for his country's actions.
"I am aware that this year is the 70th anniversary of Darwin's bombing and during a certain period in the not-too-distant past, Japan caused tremendous damage and suffering to the people of many countries," Mr Matsushita said.
Japanese officials have in the past apologised for the country's actions in World War II, but Mr Matsushita is believed to be the most senior politician to apologise on Northern Territory soil for the bombing of Darwin. (Sydney Morning Herald)

Rising to the top in male-centric Japanany's products made delicious rice.
More and more women are taking on senior management positions in large companies and the public service in Japan.
The manufacturing sector, though, is generally thought of as having a glass ceiling for women.
However, one woman managed to make her way up the corporate ladder and into the boardroom at Japanese manufacturing giant Panasonic.
Machiko Miyai joined Matsushita Electric in 1983 which is today known as Panasonic.
She joined the rice cooker business unit and her job was to make sure that the company's products made delicious rice.
She moved up the ranks through the years, and this April, Machiko became the first woman to join the company's board of directors, making her the highest ranking woman in the company with 80,000 employees worldwide. (Channel NewsAsia)

Noda: Peacemaker, orator, fight fan
Yoshihiko Noda became a Cabinet member for the first time in June last year when he was made finance minister in Prime Minister Naoto Kan's administration. Noda took on the task of rebuilding the nation's finances and curbing the yen's sharp rise.
Noda has been dubbed a puppet of the Finance Ministry by some, but is also rated highly for his peaceful and stable demeanor.
Noda was one of the first people to graduate from the Matsushita Institute of Government and Management, the leadership development institute established by Konosuke Matsushita (1894-1989), founder of what is today known as the Panasonic Group. Noda will be the first graduate from the institute to become prime minister. (Yomiuri)
