Panasonic plotting green tack
Panasonic Corp. said Friday it plans to boost sales and domestic and international competitiveness by expanding green technology products.

Panasonic Corp.'s $4.6 billion purchase of Sanyo Electric Co. may spur a wave of takeovers of rival electric-car battery makers as automakers seek to avoid depending on a limited pool of suppliers, analysts said.
Panasonic yesterday said it bought 50.2 percent of Sanyo a year after announcing its plans. The acquisition gives the electronics maker a controlling stake in the world's biggest maker of lithium-ion batteries, strengthening its position in a market that the company forecasts will grow more than fivefold to 3.2 trillion yen ($36 billion) by 2018. Sanyo wins first lithium-ion car battery customers
Sanyo Electric, the world's biggest maker of rechargeable batteries, has won at least two customers for its lithium-ion batteries to fuel plug-in hybrid vehicles, an executive said.
The company will start supplying the batteries to automakers, including a Japanese and a foreign carmaker, as early as in the latter half of 2011. (NewsWeek)

Panasonic gets U.S. OK to buy Sanyo
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission said Tuesday it has conditionally approved Panasonic Corp.'s plan to buy Sanyo Electric Co., clearing the last hurdle for Sanyo to become a Panasonic subsidiary.
The two companies agreed to sell part of Sanyo's portable nickel metal hydride battery business to FDK Corp., a Fujitsu Ltd. subsidiary, and this will preserve competition after Panasonic's proposed $9 billion acquisition of Sanyo, the FTC said. (Kyodo)

Sanyo to sell homes powered by solar panels and Li-ion batteries
A subsidiary of Sanyo Electric has started selling eco-friendly homes powered with solar panels and lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries.
Sanyo Homes launched sales in Japan of so-called "all-electric homes" at the weekend, each equipped with a 3.78kW solar power system, with back-up power to come from a 1.57kW Li-ion battery. The solar panels and batteries will be supplied by its parent company. (Business Green)

Sanyo eyes boost in solar investment
Sanyo Electric Co Ltd plans to ramp up investment in its battery and solar business as the world's largest maker of rechargeable batteries moves closer to being acquired by Japan's Panasonic Corp, a senior executive said in an interview on Thursday.
Sanyo's executive vice president, Mitsuru Honma, declined to give an estimate of how much money will be pumped into the business but said a "humongous amount" was needed to grow. (Reuters)
