Tokyo stocks fall on profit-taking as stronger yen weighs
Tokyo stocks fell Thursday, a day after the key Nikkei index ended at a two-week high, as a stronger yen prodded investors to lock in profits, although losses were limited amid optimism about Japanese corporate earnings.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 57.25 points, or 0.59 percent, from Wednesday to 9,696.02. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 4.24 points, or 0.49 percent, at 861.27.
Shares of Panasonic tumbled on dilution worries after reports that the electronics maker has decided to make Sanyo Electric Co. and Panasonic Electric Works Co. its wholly owned units within fiscal 2010 at the earliest. (AP)

Cooker makes bread out of rice
Backed by the recent revival of rice consumption, Sanyo Electric Co. debuted a machine Tuesday that can bake bread out of rice. The Gopan looks similar to a rice cooker. Just add 220 grams of rice, 210 grams of water, sugar, salt and shortening in the bread pan, and gluten and dry yeast in the unit's automatic dispenser, and the machine grinds the grain, and kneads and bakes the dough in about four hours. Panasonic aims to be Japan No. 1 in solar business
Panasonic Corp. is banking on the solar-panel business that it gained by acquiring domestic rival Sanyo, aiming for top market share of at least 35 percent in Japan by 2012.
New solar generation products, being offered in Japan starting next month, combine Sanyo Electric Co.'s solar technology with Panasonic's sales networks in appliances and housing, said Panasonic Executive Vice President Toshihiro Sakamoto.
Panasonic will be able to provide overall energy-saving systems for homes that will include rechargeable batteries, heating and air conditioning, security systems and Net-linking gadgets besides solar panels, which will all be hooked up to each other, he said. (AP)

Woman's arm severed by speeding bullet train in Hiroshima
A woman's arm was cut off when she was struck by a bullet train passing through a station here after she climbed down to the tracks, officials said.
The No. 16 Nozomi bullet train hit the woman at about 9:55 a.m. on Monday as it sped though Onomichi Station on the JR Sanyo Shinkansen line. Her left arm was severed in the accident, but her injuries were not life-threatening, local fire department officials said. (Mainichi)

Electric car travels record 1,000km on single charge
An electric car in Japan has set a new world record by running for more than 27 hours and covering over 1,000km without being recharged. The customised Mira EV travelled at speeds of around 40kph as it drove non-stop around a car racing course in Shimotsuma in Ibaraki Prefecture.
The red and white vehicle, fitted with a special lithium ion battery created by the Japanese company Sanyo, ran for 27.5 hours covering a distance of 1,003km without being recharged. (telegraph.co.uk)

EV breaks record with 1,003-km run
A Tokyo civic group said Sunday it managed to get an electric car to run 1,003.184 km without a recharge, shattering its own world record from last year.
The Japan Electric Vehicle Club said it will ask Guinness World Records to officially recognize the journey, which was completed at a racing course in Shimotsuma, Ibaraki Prefecture, as the world's longest.
The vehicle, powered by Sanyo Electric Co.'s lithium-ion battery system, ran for about 27 1/2 hours until around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, at a speed of about 40 kph, the group said. (Japan Times)

Suzuki to make plug-in hybrids using Sanyo batteries
Suzuki Motor Corp., Japan's second-largest minicar maker, plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid version of its Swift compact car using batteries supplied by Sanyo Electric Co., the automaker said.
Suzuki dealerships in Japan will test 60 units of the car in the second half of this year. The vehicle runs 15 kilometers on a fully charged battery and will have a 0.66 liter engine to generate electricity. (BusinessWeek)

Sanyo to sell chip, micromotor units
Sanyo Electric Co. plans to sell its semiconductor and micromotor businesses in a second wave of restructuring since coming under the wing of Panasonic Corp. in December, sources said Monday.
Sanyo Electric will sell Sanyo Semiconductor Co. in Oizumi, Gunma Prefecture, and Sanyo Seimitsu Co. in Ueda, Nagano Prefecture, according to the sources, who asked not to be identified before the subsidiary makes a formal decision on the sale. (Japan Times)

A subsidiary of Sanyo Electric has started selling eco-friendly homes powered with solar panels and lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries.
Sanyo Homes launched sales in Japan of so-called "all-electric homes" at the weekend, each equipped with a 3.78kW solar power system, with back-up power to come from a 1.57kW Li-ion battery. The solar panels and batteries will be supplied by its parent company. (Business Green)

Sanyo eyes boost in solar investment
Sanyo Electric Co Ltd plans to ramp up investment in its battery and solar business as the world's largest maker of rechargeable batteries moves closer to being acquired by Japan's Panasonic Corp, a senior executive said in an interview on Thursday.

Shinkansen fares cut by up to 27%

Sanyo is addressing the space issue in cities such as Tokyo with a new model of folding bicycle. The CY-SPJ220 is a rather small device with 20-inch tires. It folds in half for fitting into elevators and stowing in apartment foyers or on balconies. The bike weighs just 18 1/2 kg, making it portable.
