  • Feb 7 As Japan's tech sector struggles, the winner is... Hitachi? Sony Corp., Panasonic Corp. and Sharp Corp. all said last week that they now forecast hundreds of billions of yen in net losses for the current fiscal year through March. Toshiba Corp.'s outlook was much brighter: It only expects net profit to tumble 53%. But Hitachi Ltd. stood out from its peers: In an industry wracked by overcapacity, the strong yen and cheaper competition it didn't cut its net profit outlook, sticking to a forecast of Y200 billion this fiscal year, which would be a 16% drop from a year earlier. It wasn't always like this. In the wake of the global financial crisis, Hitachi, whose operations span everything from consumer electronics to electric power infrastructure, posted an eye-popping Y787.34 billion net loss for the fiscal year through March 2009 - over $10 billion at current exchange rates and the biggest loss ever reported by a Japanese manufacturer. (If Panasonic's loss forecast of Y780 billion for this fiscal year proves accurate, it would be the second biggest after Hitachi's 2009 figure.) (Wall Street Journal)
  • Feb 3 Japan Inc. suppliers cut jobs as yen batters tv, chip profit Japan Inc. is suffering and the supply chain is bearing the cost. Sumco Corp., a supplier to Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp., said yesterday it will cut 1,300 jobs. Auto windshield maker Nippon Sheet Glass Co., which sells to Mazda Motor Corp., said it will cut 3,500 jobs. They join NEC Corp., a Japanese maker of telecom equipment and components, which said last month it would eliminate 10,000 positions. The yen's 7 percent surge against the dollar in the past 12 months has widened losses at Panasonic Corp. Sony, Mazda and Sharp Corp., which plans to halve TV production at its biggest factory to reduce inventory. Manufacturers have been forced to both relocate production outside of Japan and to press their suppliers for cost cuts. (BusinessWeek)
  • Jan 26 Toshiba plans to release e-book reader Toshiba Corp. said Thursday it will enter the e-book reader market with the release in Japan of its BookPlace DB50, which boasts a 7-inch color screen, on Feb. 10. The Internet-enabled device via Wi-Fi services can store up to about 6,000 novels, or about 150 comic books, the electronics company said. The product will be priced at about ¥22,000. Users can purchase e-books at the BookPlace store run by BookLive Co., a unit of Toppan Printing Co. (Japan Times)
  • Jan 25 Japanese stocks advance as yen eases, Apple posts record profit Japanese stocks advanced, sending the Topix Index up for a seventh day, as the yen weakened and technology companies rose after Apple Inc. reported record sales and profit. Sony Corp., Japan's biggest exporter of consumer electronics, gained 4.8 percent. Toshiba Corp., a supplier of chips for Apple's iPad, rose 1.8 percent. Toyota Motor Corp. climbed 3 percent after a report that Nippon Steel Corp. agreed to cut material prices for Japan's biggest carmaker. The Topix, the country's broadest equity gauge, climbed 1.3 percent to 767.40 at the 3 p.m. close in Tokyo, its longest winning streak since July 6. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average rose 1.1 percent to 8,883.69, its highest since Oct. 31. (BusinessWeek)
  • Jan 19 Toshiba wins U.S. turbine order Toshiba Corp. said Thursday it has won an order to supply a steam turbine and generator for a thermal power plant in the United States for $80 million. Under the contract with Colorado-based utility Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association Inc. and Kansas-based utility Sunflower Electric Power Corp., Toshiba will install the equipment at the Holcomb Thermal Power Plant in Kansas. (Japan Times)
  • Jan 15 Electronics giants turn to smart cities Hitachi, Ltd., Toshiba Corp. and other major electronics makers are increasingly turning their sights toward "smart city" projects designed to create eco-friendly, energy-efficient communities. In the wake of the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake, smart cities are considered to be a crucial part of the government's energy-saving policy. Such projects are already under way overseas, particularly in urban developments in newly emerging economies. Foreign electronics companies, including General Electric Co. of the United States, are also gearing up to enter the smart city market, intensifying competition for orders. (Yomiuri)
  • Jan 6 Toshiba to roll out 'thinnest' 10-inch tablet at CES Toshiba claims it is going to introduce the world's thinnest 10-inch tablet at the Consumer Electronics Show next week in Las Vegas. The company's Japanese-language Web site says it's the thinnest and lightest 10.1-inch tablet in the world. Though Toshiba's not revealing a model number, it's probably a good bet that the mystery tablet is one already available in Japan: the Regza AT700. Or the very similar Toshiba Excite, slated to appear in in the U.S. later this month. It's thin at 7.7mm. And, yes, it is thin. All 7.7 mm of it. The iPad 2, by comparison, is 8.8 mm thick. At 558g, it's slightly less than the iPad's 613g. (CNET)
  • Dec 23 New Toshiba reactor model gets U.S. nod The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved Toshiba Corp.'s AP1000 reactor design, paving the way for the first new reactor construction license to be issued in more than 30 years. The five-member agency voted unanimously Thursday in favor of certifying the reactor's design. Southern Co. and Scana Corp. are seeking permission to use the next-generation reactors to expand nuclear power output at existing sites in Georgia and South Carolina. The certification "marks an important milestone toward constructing the first U.S. nuclear reactors in three decades," Energy Secretary Steven Chu said Thursday in a statement. (Japan Times)
  • Nov 30 Toshiba to shut three Japan semiconductor plants Electronics and manufacturing giant Toshiba said Wednesday it is to shut three semiconductor factories in Japan as part of a reorganisation of its business, as it grapples with falling profits. It also said it would slow production at a number of plants over the winter because of the drop off in demand for electronic goods in the West, where battered economies are showing few signs of life. Toshiba said the closure of the facilities would mean moving production to three other existing factories, allowing the company "to strengthen cost competitiveness and focus on higher value added products". Toshiba last month announced net profit in the six months to September had dropped 18.5 percent, mainly due to a strong yen and the impact of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, which savaged production and distribution lines. (AFP)
  • Nov 23 Apple moves production to Sharp for TV debut Apple Inc. is shifting production of iPhone and iPad displays to Sharp Corp. in Japan and may introduce a television with screens from the same partner as early as the middle of 2012, Jefferies & Co. said. Apple is moving its business to Sharp in Japan largely at the expense of Samsung Electronics Co., a growing rival in smartphones and tablets, said Peter Misek, a New York-based analyst at Jefferies. The company's relationship with Samsung is deteriorating, Misek said. Besides diversifying away from Samsung for displays, Apple has shifted some purchases of flash memory from Samsung to Toshiba Corp., he said. The deal with Sharp gives Apple more control over manufacturing. (BusinessWeek)
  • Nov 7 Toshiba wins geothermal order Toshiba Corp. said Monday it has won a ¥7 billion order to supply four steam turbines and generators for Kenya's largest geothermal power plant. A consortium of Toyota Tsusho Corp. and South Korea's Hyundai Engineering Co. won a contract with Kenya Electricity Generating Co. to build the power generation facility, and Toshiba was selected by Hyundai to supply the turbines and generators for the project, Toshiba said. (Japan Times)
  • Oct 22 Thai floods bring new headaches for Japan manufacturers Industrial equipment maker Toshiba Machine Co. Thursday did what thousands of fellow Japanese companies have done in recent years-it announced plans to step up manufacturing in Thailand. But with the Southeast Asian nation suffering from its worst flooding in decades, halting production across a range of industries, moves like that by Toshiba Machine, 20%-owned by the sprawling Toshiba Corp. conglomerate, could become rarer in the future as firms grow wary of further investments in the country. As Bangkok seeks to deflect criticism from some quarters over alleged slow handling of the crisis, other Japanese firms are pausing to reflect on the state of play as factories stand idle or partially submerged. (Reuters)
  • Oct 6 Japanese users mourn Jobs' death at Tokyo trade show News of the death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs reached Japan on Thursday, as manufacturers hawked their latest iPad and MacBook clones at a giant trade show outside of Tokyo. Thousands of attendees at Ceatec, Japan's largest electronics exhibition, walked past rows of booths displaying thin tablets with glass touchscreens and tiny, lightweight ultrabook computers. The country's electronics makers, including Sony, Toshiba and Fujitsu, all showed their tablet lines launched in pursuit of the iPad, while others like Sharp have already admitted defeat and slashed production. (Computerworld)
  • Oct 5 Toshiba ultra-thin AT700 tablet wows Ceatec crowds Toshiba has underlined its commitment to boosting its tablet business with a 10.1-inch Android slate it calls the thinnest and lightest in the world. People are lining up here at Ceatec 2011 outside of Tokyo to check out the Regza AT700, which runs on Android 3.2, is 7.7mm (0.3 inches) thick, and weighs 558 grams (1.23 pounds). Toshiba also announced a 7-inch version, the AT3S0, at 12.1mm thick and weighing 379 grams (0.83 pound). Like the company's Thrive tabs, the AT700 and AT3S0 run version 3.2 of Android, have 1GB of memory, 1,280x800-pixel resolution, and Resolution+ upscaling technology to improve low-resolution video. (CNET)
  • Oct 4 Asia's biggest tech fair opens in Japan Smartphones detecting bad breath and radiation, twistable remote controls and a super-thin tablet computer were just some of the gadgets on show at Asia's biggest tech fair in Japan Tuesday. Around 600 firms unveiled their innovations at the Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (Ceatec) technology exhibition in Chiba, near Tokyo, which is expected to draw 200,000 visitors during its five-day run, organisers said. Japan's Toshiba showcased what it calls "the world's thinnest and lightest" tablet computer, equipped with a 10.1-inch display that is just 7.7 millimetres (0.3-inch) thick and weighs 558 grams (19.5 ounces). • Sep 13 'Smart cities' envisioned / Raft of high-tech green energy projects planned in devastated areas Plans to rebuild many areas devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake as environmentally friendly "smart cities" are being explored by corporations and municipal governments. By promoting large-scale projects that include power-generation facilities utilizing renewable energy and smart grids, the plans are also meant to create jobs. Some companies and local governments have already started working together on these projects. Major electronics manufacturer Toshiba Corp. has proposed an integrated system, with facilities ranging from power generation and water-treatment systems to "smart meter" next-generation power meters, to some local governments. (Yomiuri)

(Japan Times)
  • Aug 17 Apple may invest $1 bln in Sharp LCD plant Apple Inc plans to invest in a Sharp Corp factory to secure a supply of LCD screens for iPhones and iPads, sources said, triggering expectations Apple may step up orders to Japanese parts makers. The proposed move, along with an investment in a new LCD factory of Toshiba Corp , comes as Apple and key supplier Samsung Electronics battle in courts over patent disputes, spurring talk that Apple may diversify suppliers. Japanese chipmakers in particular, such as Elpida Memory Inc and Toshiba Corp , are hopeful of larger orders from Apple if the U.S. company's relationship with Samsung deteriorates further, sources familiar with the matter said. (Reuters)
