Japan beyond the Ginza
Nintendo, Sony, Sega, Canon, Nikon, Toshiba, Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan -- these are just some of the brands that helped build Japan's reputation as a leader in cutting-edge technology. But this ancient country is also home to centuries-old traditions, which endure despite the hi-tech revolution that has taken place around them. The contrast between old and new is what makes Japan a truly fascinating country to visit. (Toronto Sun)

Toshiba to sell 'no-glasses' 3-D TV by yearend
Toshiba Corp. will start marketing a 3-D TV that people can watch without wearing special eyeglasses, the first such TV in the world, sources said Tuesday.
The company hopes to have the product on sale by the end of this year.
Although various major consumer electronics makers have released 3-D TVs, including Panasonic Corp. in April and Sony Corp. in June, critics have complained about the bother of having to wear special glasses. (Japan Times)

Holidays lost in rush to win electronics battle
Domestic firms are operating through the summer holidays to meet increased demand for semiconductors, electronic components used in smartphones and flat-screen TVs.
Toshiba Corp., a leading maker of NAND-type flash memory devices, plans to dramatically expand its production capacity as the global chip market is anticipated to balloon to its biggest-ever size this year.
To catch up to Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea, the second-biggest semiconductor maker in the world, Toshiba and other Japanese firms need to liquidate unprofitable operations while shutting down or consolidating some manufacturing plants. (Yomiuri)

Android Phone Coming from Fujitsu, Headed to DoCoMo?
Following on the Fujitsu / Toshiba mobile merger, reports have bubbled up saying that they've already started on their first handset, which is headed to Japan's NTT DoCoMo and will be running Android. Little beyond that is known, but the platform choice is significant, given Toshiba had already put significant time and effort into some rightly impressive Windows Mobile hardware. Though the bulk of Fujitsu's previous experience in mobile revolved around feature phones, they've worked with DoCoMo on getting LTE ready in Japan. (intomobile.com)

Toshiba to develop batteries for electric vehicles
Japanese electronics maker Toshiba Corp. said Friday it's jumping into the battery business for electric vehicles in a development deal with Mitsubishi Motors Corp.
It's the first EV battery deal with a major automaker for Toshiba, which already makes batteries for laptops and cell phones, said company spokesman Ken Shinjo. Production will start sometime next year, in a new facility in Niigata, northern Japan, according to Toshiba. (Mainichi)

Toshiba takes on iPad, Kindle
The electronic book reader market got more crowded Monday with Toshiba's launch of a dual-screened mini notebook PC that can be used as an e-reader.
And competition intensified with Amazon.comand Barnes & Noble slashing prices on electronic book readers, responding to intensifying competition as Apple's iPad gains market share.
Apple's iPad, launched in April, sold more than two million units in 60 days, and analysts say the well-received device has been steadily luring customers away from the Kindle and Nook.

1+1=3? Not in Japan's 'Galapagos' phone market
Japan's mobile phones feature breathtakingly sophisticated technology, and the offerings from Toshiba Corp. and Fujitsu Ltd. are no exception. But simply combining their handset operations may not be enough to gain a global presence. Toshiba and Fujitsu, industrial electronics conglomerates whose products range from air conditioners to semiconductors, are in talks to merge their mobile phone businesses, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The news was splashed on the front page of Japan's Nikkei business daily, with the joint entity expected to be the second biggest player in the country's saturated mobile phone market with a 19% share - trailing only Sharp Corp. But missing is the fact that the two comprise less than 1% of all the handsets sold worldwide - an indication that this deal would create another big fish in a small pond. (Wall Street Journal)

Toshiba, Fujitsu in talks on mobile phone merger
Toshiba Corp. and Fujitsu Ltd. are in talks toward integrating their mobile phone businesses to boost competitiveness amid sluggish handset sales, sources said Friday.

According to the broad contours of this agreement, New Delhi will promise not to conduct any more nuclear tests in exchange for Japanese permission to its companies, Hitachi, Toshiba and Mitsubishi to go ahead and partner with US and French companies seeking to build civilian nuclear plants in India. Toshiba television to stream its content from the Internet
Traditionally, the preferred methods of delivering content have been over the airwaves or on video tape or disc. In the wings, though, is the rival technique of watching TV footage sent into homes via the Web. Toshiba is trumpeting this newer method with its latest Regza LCD televisions, the Z1 series. Featuring LED lighting for the screens, the Z1 quartet offers the ability to watch TV via a LAN hookup or USB connection. (Japan Times)

Future bright for LED bulbs
Falling prices and the growing variety of light-emitting diode bulbs are fueling a rapid move in this country away from energy-inefficient incandescent light bulbs and toward LED bulbs, which last longer and consume less energy.
Support from the government, which is strengthening its efforts to battle global warming, also is spurring the move toward LEDs.
Toshiba Corp. is making a particularly visible shift to LED bulbs. (Yomiuri)

New cellphones to feature 'secretary' functions
A new technology developed by Toshiba Corp. could turn cellphones into virtual secretaries capable of providing information to help users plot their next move.
The technology, which could be available for practical use by the end of this year, enables cellphones to "predict" the user's actions based on behavioral patterns monitored by such programs as the Global Positioning System, Toshiba officials said.
The technology also draws on acceleration sensors that detect the handsets' movements, such as rocking and shaking. (Asahi)

Toshiba Blu-ray recorders, mCube90 make life more compact
If you can't beat them, don't join them - just copy their ideas and improve them. Toshiba is endeavoring to do just that having abandoned its HD-DVD format and instead opted to craft versions of Sony's brainchild, Blu-ray. Nobody can accuse Toshiba of not doing a wholehearted about face, what with three new Vardia-branded Blu-ray recorders to hit the market next month. The best of the bunch is the D-B1005K, which sports a prodigious 1-terabyte hard disk for recording up to 500 hours of high-definition TV footage. (Japan Times)
