HOKKAIDO, Jun 24 (News On Japan) - For the first time in Hokkaido, a nationwide gathering of regional mascots is being held, drawing characters and fans from across Japan and overseas. At Wing Bay Otaru, the venue in Otaru City, a total of 59 local characters from Hokkaido, other parts of Japan, and abroad have assembled for the event.
Large crowds of fans lined up to take commemorative photos, aiming their cameras at their favorite characters. After opening with a radio calisthenics session, the mascots promoted their respective regions and mingled with visitors in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. One young boy attending the event said, "I brought along the local mascot plush toys I had at home," while a young girl declared, "My favorite is Manbekun." The organizing committee successfully raised 5 million yen through crowdfunding, surpassing its 3 million yen goal, which made it possible to hold the event. The festival runs until 3 p.m. on June 22nd.
