Volcanic eruption occurs on Satsuma-Iojima island

Nov 03 (NHK) - Japan's Meteorological Agency has issued an eruption notice for Satsuma-Iojima Island in the southwestern prefecture of Kagoshima.

The agency says a volcanic eruption occurred on the island at around 5:35 p.m. on Saturday.

It has raised the volcanic alert level for the island from one to two on a scale of five, and is urging people within around one kilometer of the crater to exercise caution against falling volcanic rocks.

The agency also warns that people, including climbers, entering volcanic areas need to take appropriate protective action.
