Japan's theme park lays off temp workers

NHK -- Apr 03

NHK has learned that a major theme park in southwestern Japan has laid off dozens of temporary staff amid the coronavirus outbreak. Officials at Huis Ten Bosch reportedly made the decision about two weeks ago.

The workers found out they had lost their jobs on March 16, the day the theme park re-opened after closing for about two weeks.

A former employee said, "The company should have told us the situation in advance." Another said, "The notice was so sudden. I was surprised. I have no words."

The facility is now limiting operations to parks, outdoor attractions and restaurants.

Officials say they had no choice but to cut the non-regular workers, because redeploying their workforce would not have stemmed the facility's financial losses.

They say they are now discussing compensation for their former employees.
