HOKKAIDO, Sep 22 (News On Japan) - Environment Minister Keiichiro Asao has expressed his view that construction of large-scale solar panel projects in the Kushiro Wetlands of Hokkaido should be restrained.
Asao stated, "Solar power developments that cannot coexist with local communities should be curbed."
The minister indicated that government ministries will jointly consider responses to the ongoing mega-solar development near the Kushiro National Park.
After meeting Asao, Kushiro Mayor Hidenori Tsuruma also commented: "There are areas designated for solar promotion, but the current system does not allow zoning for restricted areas. I am grateful that a liaison council has been established."
The first interagency meeting on the matter is scheduled to take place on September 24th.
