[Manga] Man Who Made Bomb Threats Gets Brutal Underworld Payback

Apr 30 (News On Japan) - A man who repeatedly made fake bomb threats around a nightlife district in Japan met a violent end after provoking a local underworld figure.

It began when the man, 22-year-old Katetsu, an equipment worker and part-time laborer, picked a fight with a man in front of a bar after their shoulders bumped. When Katetsu demanded compensation and the man refused, tensions escalated. The situation was defused by Samejima, a well-known enforcer who “backs” several establishments in the area. Katetsu, humiliated by the encounter, decided to retaliate.

He called a club pretending to be from a rival group and warned, "A bomb has been planted in the building." Smoke was soon seen coming from a restroom, causing panic. The fire turned out to be from burning paper in a trash can, but guests were evacuated. Police, initially treating it as a prank, began receiving similar calls in the days that followed.

Katetsu continued his bomb hoaxes, disguising alarm clocks as bombs and planting them in buildings hosting lounges and cabarets. As each call triggered evacuations, he watched from nearby, enjoying the commotion he caused.

But after several incidents, including five within a short span, a vigilante investigation team called "Succubus"—a loosely organized group supporting the nightlife businesses—began reviewing surveillance footage. They noticed the same man appearing near each scene. The team circulated photos, and a plan to catch him was put into action.

Eventually, Katetsu was trailed after he left his workplace wearing a stolen worker’s uniform to avoid suspicion. He wandered near another target but was confronted by Samejima, who had already identified him. When Katetsu refused to cooperate, Samejima demanded to see inside his backpack. Katetsu resisted, but the enforcer overpowered him and discovered the fake bomb.

Despite pleading ignorance, Katetsu was abducted and taken to a remote site. There, Samejima revealed what he called a "real" explosive setup and began a countdown. Katetsu panicked, realizing too late that his prank had crossed a line. As the fuse burned down, the area exploded.

Samejima later remarked that it was not just about business disruptions. Years earlier, one of his close friends, Kurokawa, was killed in a real explosion. Since then, threats of any kind had become intolerable.

Though the incident ended in an apparent act of vigilante justice, many questioned whether Samejima had gone too far. Others said Katetsu’s repeated hoaxes endangered lives and eroded trust, making retaliation inevitable.
