HOKKAIDO, Jul 21 (News On Japan) - To tackle the growing issue of overtourism, authorities in Biei, Hokkaido, have banned parking around the scenic "Seven Stars Tree" for one month starting July 18th.
Despite cloudy skies and a weekday schedule, large crowds of tourists continued to gather near the popular photo spot on July 18th. Some foreign visitors were even seen posing for pictures in the middle of the road.
This time of year coincides with the wheat harvest in Biei, and parked tourist vehicles have been obstructing the passage of agricultural machinery, raising concerns among local farmers.
In response to requests from the town, police introduced parking restrictions in 2024. The latest measures cover two segments of town roads—totaling about one kilometer—centered around the Seven Stars Tree. The no-parking order will remain in effect through August 15th.
