May 28 (News On Japan) - More than 20 Japanese nationals have been detained by authorities in northwestern Cambodia on suspicion of being involved in a special fraud operation based in a local building.
According to investigators, the arrests took place on May 27th in the border town of Poipet, near Thailand, an area lined with casino hotels and known for cross-border activity. The crackdown followed a tip-off that "Japanese people are committing fraud" in the area.
Local authorities searched a room in the building and detained about 50 foreign nationals in total, with many believed to be Japanese.
The building is suspected to have served as a base for special fraud operations, and officials are now investigating the full scope of the group's activities.
