Luxury Sleeper Train Debuts 2-Day Scenic Lake Biwa Journey

SHIGA, Mar 04 (News On Japan) - JR West has introduced a new route for its luxury sleeper train Twilight Express Mizukaze, offering passengers a scenic journey around Lake Biwa.

The deep green train, known for its elegant design, travels across western Japan under the concept "A hotel running through beautiful Japan," combining rail travel with the comfort of a luxury hotel.

A newly launched itinerary introduced this month allows passengers to complete a one-night, two-day journey that circles Lake Biwa while connecting Kyoto and Shimonoseki.

Passengers can enjoy sweeping views from the train’s open observation cars.

A reporter covering the service commented: "From the wide train windows, you can fully take in the vast views of Lake Biwa."

Although the weather was cloudy on the day of the preview, passengers on clear days may be able to see the lake’s famous vivid "Biwa Blue."

Along with the scenery, travelers can enjoy lunch prepared using locally sourced ingredients from Shiga Prefecture.

While it is a train journey, the itinerary also includes stops along the way, allowing passengers to disembark and visit tourist attractions and temples within Shiga.

The train’s guest rooms are designed to function like hotel suites. During the day, passengers can relax while enjoying the scenery, and at night the rooms convert into comfortable sleeping spaces with beds.

The new Mizukaze route offers an elegant way to circle Lake Biwa. Prices start at 335,000 yen per person for a Royal Single room based on double occupancy, and services begin with the outbound journey on March 21st and the return route on March 23rd.
