Princess Kako returns from studying in Britain

Jun 16 (NHK) - Princess Kako, a granddaughter of Emperor Akihito, has returned to Japan after studying in Britain for about 9 months.

Princess Kako is the younger daughter of Prince Akishino, the Emperor's younger son.

She arrived at Tokyo's Haneda Airport on Friday afternoon and was greeted by Imperial Household Agency staff at the airport. She responded with a smile to calls of "Welcome home!" from news reporters.

Princess Kako had studied as an exchange student at the University of Leeds since last September. She took classes in subjects that included performing arts and psychology.

The Imperial Household Agency says the princess stayed in a dormitory at Leeds. She toured Portugal and Spain with a female friend from the university during spring vacation.

The agency quotes a statement from Princess Kako, "I had an enjoyable and fruitful 9 months in Britain. I will treasure my experiences there."

The Princess will start her senior year at International Christian University in Tokyo in September. She will also resume her duties as a member of the Imperial family.
