Suga expresses support for Tokyo's action

NHK -- Dec 02

Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide and the Tokyo governor agreed to ask seniors and people with underlying health issues to refrain from using the central government's "Go To Travel" domestic tourism campaign when traveling to and from the capital.

Suga met with Koike Yuriko on Tuesday. After the meeting, Suga told reporters that he understood why the governor felt the need to make such a request. He said they agreed on having the central government and the Tokyo metropolitan government work together to prevent further spread of the coronavirus.

The central government has temporarily excluded Osaka and Sapporo from the "Go To Travel" domestic tourism campaign because of rising infection numbers in the two cities. But Tokyo is still covered by the campaign, which provides subsidies for travel expenses.
