New Olympic, Paralympic facility opens in Tokyo

Nov 26 (NHK) - A new sports facility has opened in Tokyo's Chofu City.

It will be one of the venues for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

An opening ceremony for the Musashino Forest Sport Centre was held on Saturday.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said the center is the first to open among the new facilities for the 2020 Games.

She said she wants to boost everyone's mood for the event.

Koike later watched a sitting volleyball game and applauded the plays.

The new facility will be used for the badminton and modern pentathlon fencing events in the Olympics as well as wheelchair basketball in the Paralympics.

The facility sits on a 30,000-square-meter plot of land.

Its main arena can accommodate up to 10,000 people.

It also has an indoor swimming pool and a smaller arena which can be used for martial arts.
