YOKOHAMA - South Korean semiconductor giant Samsung Electronics has begun full-scale operations at a new semiconductor research center in Yokohama, seeking to accelerate development and strengthen cooperation with Japanese suppliers as demand for chips used in artificial intelligence continues to grow.

Samsung held an opening ceremony for the facility in Yokohama's Minato Mirai district as the research center moved into full operation.

The center will allow Samsung to introduce and test semiconductor materials developed in Japan without first transporting them to South Korea, helping shorten the time required for research and development.

Japan has strengths in semiconductor materials and manufacturing equipment, making closer cooperation with Japanese companies increasingly important as competition intensifies over advanced chips.

With demand for semiconductors used in artificial intelligence continuing to expand, Samsung plans to use the Yokohama center to deepen collaboration with Japan and speed the development of next-generation semiconductor technologies.
