FUKUOKA, May 30 (News On Japan) - A 20-year-old man who went missing while attempting to swim across Hakata Bay from Nokonoshima Island to the mainland was found in the water and later confirmed dead.
According to the Fukuoka Coast Guard and local fire department, a distress call was made at around 5:00 p.m. on May 29th, reporting that a man who had set out to swim from Nokonoshima to Odo had not yet arrived. The call came from a friend who had been waiting at the destination.
The man began swimming alone at around 1:45 p.m. from a beach at the southern tip of Nokonoshima, located in Nishi Ward, Fukuoka City. Authorities launched a search and discovered him floating offshore near Nagatare Beach, west of his intended destination, shortly before 6:00 p.m.
He was transported to a nearby ferry terminal but was pronounced dead upon arrival. The Fukuoka Coast Guard is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
