Seibu Railway demonstrated a trial of autonomous robots equipped with physical artificial intelligence (AI) at an electrical substation in Tokyo on October 14, testing technology designed to streamline maintenance operations and address anticipated labor shortages.

The company opened the demonstration to the media, showcasing robots that use AI to control their movements and perform tasks autonomously. The technology, known as "physical AI," enables machines to operate in real-world environments rather than relying solely on conventional programmed instructions.

Seibu Railway aims to reduce the time maintenance workers spend traveling between electrical facilities spread across a wide geographical area. The company also hopes to establish a more efficient maintenance management system by accumulating and analyzing inspection data collected by the robots.

The trial forms part of the railway operator's preparations for a future decline in available workers, with automation expected to help maintain essential electrical infrastructure while improving operational efficiency.
