Humanoid Robot Brings AI Into the Classroom

SHIZUOKA - High school students in Mishima, Shizuoka Prefecture, explored how humans and artificial intelligence might coexist in the future by interacting with an AI-powered humanoid robot during a class on September 11.

The students met Miroki, a humanoid robot equipped with the generative AI system ChatGPT. Using a camera, the robot can recognize people's facial expressions and respond to questions and engage in conversation.

The lesson was organized for second-year students at Mishima Kita High School as part of "Public," a compulsory subject, with the theme of coexistence between humans and AI.

Many of the students already use AI services such as ChatGPT in their daily lives and enjoyed testing Miroki's conversational abilities with questions including, "Is there someone you like?"

One student said, "I think living together with robots may not be such a distant future, and they could become something that supports us while we support them."

Another said, "I think this could increasingly lead to helping people in need, such as in medical settings."

The students will continue studying issues surrounding artificial intelligence, including the question of whether AI can have a mind.
