TOKYO - Egg prices in Japan have reached a new record high of 312 yen per pack, while imported beef and chicken thigh prices have also matched their previous peaks, adding to the growing burden on household food budgets.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the average retail price of a pack of eggs sold nationwide between October 19 and 21 rose to 312 yen, setting a new record.

The ministry attributed the increase partly to the lingering effects of avian influenza outbreaks last year, which continue to restrict egg supplies. Demand is also beginning to rise ahead of the year-end holiday season, adding further pressure on prices.

Imported beef prices have also climbed, reaching an average of 451 yen per 100 grams, matching the record high recorded in July.

The increase is believed to reflect higher import costs caused by the weaker yen, along with a decline in cattle numbers in the United States following drought conditions that have affected livestock production.

Meanwhile, rising beef and pork prices have continued to push consumers toward relatively affordable chicken, sustaining strong demand and driving up retail prices.

The average price of chicken thigh meat reached 156 yen per 100 grams, matching its previous record high.

The simultaneous rise in egg, beef and chicken prices highlights the continuing pressure on Japanese households as supply constraints, currency weakness and changing consumer demand contribute to higher food costs.
